People in the city of Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, can take in an unusual sight: long pieces of cloth in five colors flying in the wind. Locals will carry the colorful hata (flags) for the Kohata no Hata Festival, an event that dates back to the 11th century.
More than 100 flag-bearers will head to Okitsushima Shrine on Mount Kohata after leaving Nihonmatsu Kohata No.1 Elementary School at 10 a.m. Half an hour before departing for the mountain, the school's grounds will also be used for competitions in which participants must run while carrying the traditional flags.
