Lineage of Eccentrics; The Miraculous World of Edo Painting at TOKYO METROPOLITAN ART MUSEUM, Ueno Park, Tokyo

In 1970, now almost a half century ago, the art historian Tsuji Nobuo (born 1932) published Lineage of Eccentrics (Kiso no keifu). In that groundbreaking book, Tsuji introduced a group of painters who had never before been comprehensively featured in books or exhibitions. These artists’ pictures shared free and innovative conceptions, otherworldly visions, and an unexpected penchant for breaking the bounds of convention. Fifty years later, these painters who were once relegated to the margins of the history of Japanese painting enjoy an almost fanatical popularity among contemporary viewers, who find links to contemporary art in their innovative expressions.   official website ››  https://kisou2019.jp/english.html
