Yamaga Lantern Festival at Omiya Shrine, Yamaga City, Kumamoto Pref.
Every weekend on Friday & Saturday, 2019 | at Omiya Shrine, Yamaga City, Kumamoto Pref. Women with lit paper lanterns on their heads and dressed in cherry colored kimonos dance elegantly in the Yamaga Lantern Festival. It is a festival led by women, which is uncommon in Kyushu. The festival derives from a traditional legend that says when the emperor visited Omiya Shrine a long time ago, a mist emerged, so the villagers welcomed him with torchlights. The Yamaga Lantern, a traditional art craft that originated in the Muromachi period, is made without the use of wood or metal fittings. The Lantern somewhat resembles Japanese women, who look frail on the surface, but are strong deep down inside. official website ›› http://www.welcomekyushu.jp/attaka/akari/?mode=detail&id=4
